Phillips Law Group is investigating claims of patients who took the medication Veozah and experienced severe liver injuries. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Veozah (fezolinetant), which is meant to treat hot flashes some women experience during menopause but may have led to liver problems for many individuals who were prescribed it. If you or a loved one took this medication and suffered symptoms of liver injury, you may be eligible for compensation through a Veozah lawsuit.
Warnings About Liver Injuries and Veozah
Veozah, a medication used to treat menopause symptoms, has recently been linked to serious liver injuries in some patients. In fact, Astellas Pharma Inc., which developed the drug, includes the following warning in prescribing information for the medication:
“Advise patients to discontinue VEOZAH immediately and seek medical attention including hepatic laboratory tests if they experience signs or symptoms that may suggest liver injury (new onset fatigue, nausea, vomiting, pruritus, jaundice, pale feces, dark urine, or right upper quadrant pain).”
In May 2023, the FDA approved Veozah, but in September 2024, the agency issued a warning regarding the possibility for the drug to cause rare, but serious liver damage when taking the medication.
“If there are signs and symptoms suggesting liver injury, stopping the medicine could prevent worsening liver injury and potentially return liver function to normal,” the FDA noted.
The FDA now requires liver blood testing in the prescribing information for Veozah. “We made this update after reviewing a postmarketing report of a patient with elevated liver blood test values and signs and symptoms of liver injury after taking the medicine for about 40 days,” the agency revealed.
The FDA also recommends increasing the frequency of liver blood testing, adding monthly testing for the following two months after starting Veozah, “and then at months 3, 6, and 9 of treatment as already recommended.”
Signs of Veozah Liver Issues
The federal agency lists the following signs and symptoms that suggest liver problems:
- Feeling more tired than usual
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Unusual itching
- Light-colored stools
- Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice)
- Dark urine
- Swelling in the stomach or belly area (abdomen)
- Pain in the right upper abdomen
It’s also recommended that healthcare providers discuss the signs and symptoms of liver injury with any patient prescribed this medication and instruct patients to stop taking it right away and contact the healthcare professional if they develop any of the aforementioned symptoms during treatment.
