UV Lamp Nail Polish Lawsuits

Recent research has raised concerns about the safety of UV lamps used in gel nail polish applications. One study suggested a potential link between exposure to high-dose artificial UV radiation from gel nail dryers and some forms of cancer. If you believe you’ve been harmed by a UV lamp during a nail service, or believe a loved one’s cancer may be linked to their use of these devices, contact our firm today to get in touch with a UV lamp nail polish lawsuit attorney.

UV Lamp Nail Polish Potential Dangers

In a 2023 study from scientists at the University of California San Diego, with information available on the National Library of Medicine website, a possible link between regular exposure to high-dose artificial UV radiation from gel nail dryers and a higher risk of cell mutation – which leads to skin cancer of the hands, feet, and nails – was discovered.

Between that study and other research, there is growing evidence that prolonged exposure to UV light may increase the risk of skin damage, premature aging, and even skin cancer.

NBC San Diego noted in 2023 that “the ultraviolet lights used at tanning salons fall within the same wavelength of radiation found in lamps at nail salons,” and that many people are already mindful of the dangers of indoor tanning beds. If a similar risk exists for skin cancer or other health issues from using UV lamps for nail polish application and setting, consumers need to be made aware of that risk.

“We saw multiple things: first, we saw that DNA gets damaged,” Ludmil Alexandrov, a UC San Diego professor and author of the study, told NBC San Diego.

“We also saw that some of the DNA damage does not get repaired over time, and it does lead to mutations after every exposure with a UV nail polish dryer. Lastly, we saw that exposure may cause mitochondrial dysfunction, which may also result in additional mutations.”

“Our experimental results and the prior evidence strongly suggest that radiation emitted by UV nail polish dryers may cause cancers of the hand and that UV nail polish dryers, similar to tanning beds, may increase the risk of early-onset skin cancer,” researchers wrote. However, they noted that additional research is needed and subsequent studies “will take at least a decade to complete.”

UV Lamp Lawsuits

If customers at nail salons are not adequately warned about the possible dangers associated with UV lamp exposure, they could risk serious adverse reactions, and manufacturers could potentially be held accountable. Individuals who have suffered skin damage or other health issues after routinely getting gel manicures with UV lamps as part of the process may be able to seek compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages.
