At Phillips Law Group, we are dedicated to pursuing justice for victims of child sexual abuse. We are also potentially able to pursue Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) crime claims.
CSAM, often referred to as child pornography, involves the creation, distribution, and possession of explicit content featuring minors. Although United States federal law still refers to this material as “Child Pornography,” CSAM is the preferred language of survivors, their loved ones, and experts in the field of seeking justice for this abuse.
These heinous acts cause profound and lasting harm to victims, and the legal system provides avenues for redress and accountability. In particular, CSAM, also referred to as child sexual exploitation imagery, is sometimes distributed through social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat, Twitter, and more.
The companies behind these platforms may be able to face justice in a criminal court if they didn’t do enough to stop illegal activity on their platforms and need to be held accountable.
Facts About CSAM
According to Thorn: Digital Defenders of Children, previously known as DNA Foundation and an international anti-human trafficking organization, “CSAM serves as a record of a child’s abuse for their abuser, and as material to fulfill a fantasy for other collectors worldwide. Abusers frequently use CSAM to re-victimize and stalk victims long after the original producer has been identified, and the material can be leveraged to groom other children for future abuse.”
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported in 2023 that there were 36 million+ incidents of suspected child sexual exploitation reported to CyberTipLine at that time. The real scale and impact of online child sexual abuse material is unknown, because in the age of the internet, it’s very hard to quantify.
Sadly, 2 out of 3 victims are abused by someone known to them in their offline communities.
Holding Companies Accountable for CSAM Distribution
If companies behind social media giants like Facebook don’t take adequate measures to prevent CSAM from being shared on their platforms, child sexual abuse material lawsuits can potentially be filed to seek justice and better highlight the need for tech companies to do more to protect minors.
If you or a loved one has been affected by CSAM, know that you are not alone.
