Moss Landing Battery Facility Fire: What Happened?

A fire at the Vistra Energy storage facility on January 16, 2025, resulted in the evacuation of over 1,200 residents and a declared state of emergency in Monterey County, according to The Salinas Californian. Community members then filed a lawsuit on February 4 in Alameda County Superior Court.

Alarmingly, in the days after the fire, San Jose State University researchers found increased levels of nickel, manganese, and cobalt – which are all heavy metals used in cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries – within a 2-mile radius of the Moss Landing power plant in the soil of neighboring Elkhorn Slough, the outlet noted.

The community members involved in the case are suing Vistra Energy, PG&E, and others. According to The Salinas Californian, the lawsuit “alleges a series of missteps by the defendants, including a failure to implement adequate fire safety measures and storing the highly volatile lithium-ion batteries in an unsafe manner.”

The lawsuit also alleges that Vistra had an outdated water suppression system that failed to put out the disastrous fire and had too many batteries stored in one enclosed space, local outlet The Mercury News reported. The outlet noted that residents complained of shortness of breath, a metallic taste in their mouth, and not being allowed to get their blood tested at local hospitals.

The Moss Landing battery facility fire may have released toxic fumes that could pose serious risks to the health and safety of nearby residents and workers. If you or a loved one was impacted by the Moss Landing battery fire, you may be entitled to compensation for a range of damages.
