What Is a Filshie Clip?
The Filshie Clip system involves “the occlusion or interruption of the fallopian tubes, thus preventing fertilization and providing highly effective long-term sterilization.”
According to Medscape, “the Filshie clip method was approved in 1996 by the US Food and Drug Administration. It involves applying a titanium clip with silicone rubber lining around the fallopian tube.” The Filshie clip then exerts “continued pressure on the fallopian tube, causing avascularization for the 3- to 5-mm area it encompasses. The silicone continues this pressure even after necrosis starts and the fallopian tube decreases in size. Fibrosis then occurs, and the clip is peritonealized.”
In short, Filshie clips block the fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy (tubal ligation). According to Utah Medical Products, the system works with “limited complications.” However, many women have dealt with alleged severe complications and side effects from the clips in recent years, resulting in a number of Filshie clip lawsuits.
Filshie Clip Lawsuits Nationwide
There are allegations of Filshie clips becoming dislodged and traveling throughout the body in women who use the birth control devices. Some lawsuits argue that the manufacturers failed to provide adequate warnings about the potential risks and complications associated with Filshie clips, resulting in Plaintiffs not being properly informed and causing damage to surrounding organs and tissues.
In a 2020 study in the American Journal of Case Reports, researchers noted, “There is growing evidence suggesting that Filshie clip migration is a rare but significant late complication following tubal sterilization. Although most women are asymptomatic, clip migration can result in serious morbidity such as abscess formation and be a source of sepsis years later.”
In addition to dangerous Filshie clip migration, there have been reports of the clips breaking or malfunctioning as well, resulting in health complications.

Filshie clip lawsuits are one way to hold manufacturers of the product accountable and secure compensation for your pain. It’s important that patients have comprehensive risk disclosure from medical device manufacturers and healthcare providers before choosing this type of medical device, especially when it comes to reproductive health, and the consequences can be severe when the risks are not adequately conveyed.
If manufacturers knew of the rate of migration risk with Filshie clips but continued marketing the devices without proper warnings, overlooking women’s safety, they should be held accountable. Legal action may lead to increased scrutiny and regulation of medical devices, securing better safety standards and more transparency for future patients.
