If you or a loved one developed breast cancer after taking Risperdal, you may be entitled to compensation. Our experienced personal injury attorneys are here to help you navigate the legal process and hold pharmaceutical companies accountable for their negligence, potentially through a Risperdal lawsuit.
What is Risperdal?
There is a potential link between long-term Risperdal use and an increased breast cancer risk in women. Risperdal is an antipsychotic medication.
Also known as Risperidone, the Cleveland Clinic reported that the medication treats mental health conditions such as “schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and some symptoms of autism.”
Rispderdone “works by balancing the levels of dopamine and serotonin in your brain, substances that help regulate mood, behaviors, and thoughts. It belongs to a group of medications called antipsychotics,” the Clinic noted.
WebMD lists some side effects from taking Risperdal, including “drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, drooling, nausea, weight gain, or tiredness.” Some more serious side effects include, “difficulty swallowing, muscle spasms, shaking (tremor), mental/mood changes (such as anxiety, restlessness), interrupted breathing during sleep.”
Risperdal Lawsuit Details
Unfortunately, some research has shown that prolonged use of Risperdal can lead to elevated levels of prolactin, a hormone that stimulates breast tissue growth. This hormonal imbalance has been linked to the development of breast cancer in women, leaving many patients with life-altering diagnoses and significant medical expenses.
Although WebMD notes that “this medication may increase a certain natural substance (prolactin) made by your body,” it doesn’t list the development of breast cancer as a known risk of taking this medication.
The manufacturers of Risperdal are facing lawsuits alleging that they failed to adequately warn patients and healthcare providers about the potential risks associated with the drug. If you were prescribed Risperdal and later diagnosed with breast cancer, you may have grounds to file a Risperdal lawsuit to recover damages for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other losses.
