Phillips Law Group and its partners are investigating claims that Elmiron has caused serious vision problems and eye damage including blindness and Pigmentary Maculopathy after long-term use. If you or a loved one have taken the drug Elmiron and are now diagnosed with Maculopathy or another serious eye health concern, please contact our firm for more information without delay.
What is Elmiron?
Elmiron is a medication used for the treatment of interstitial cystitis, a bladder disorder. According to WebMD, “It may work by forming a layer on the bladder wall and protecting it from harmful/irritating substances in the urine. It is also a weak ‘blood thinner’ and may increase the risk of bruising/bleeding (such as bleeding from the nose/gums).”
Unfortunately, while it initially seemed like the drug only potentially caused mild side effects such as hair loss, diarrhea, and nausea, new evidence shows it may allegedly cause other, more significant potential side effects than previously considered, including vision issues.
Elmiron and Vision Issues
In November 2018, researchers from Emory Eye Center in Atlanta published research linking long-term Elmiron use to unusual changes in patients’ macula only seen with Elmiron use.
The macula is a small area at the center of the retina, which is “responsible for delivering clear, crisp, central vision,” the American Academy of Ophthalmology reported.
Now, lawsuits against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Elmiron, claim that the drug has caused serious vision problems and eye damage, including Pigmentary Maculopathy, and that Janssen failed to warn patients about these potential risks. People who suffered after taking Elmiron and who may not have been adequately warned about serious side effects may be able to take legal action to seek justice for their pain.
