After hundreds of children may have ingested lead from WanaBana Applesauce Pouches, a number of WanaBana applesauce lawsuit claims have been filed and are making their way through the courts. If you or a loved one have a child who suffered symptoms of lead poisoning after eating applesauce from this brand, you may be eligible for compensation.
WanaBana Applesauce Claims
In October 2023, WanaBana USA recalled WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Purée 3-pack pouches of 2.5 oz due to reports of elevated levels of lead found in those products. By August 2024, the United States Food and Drug Administration noted on its website that the agency was “continuing to take steps following the investigation of lead and chromium in apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches this past fall that was prompted by findings of elevated blood lead levels in children.”
Earlier, in January 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published an Outbreak Investigation that reported 404 people in 43 states got lead poisoning after eating WanaBana, Schnucks, or Weis Cinnamon Applesauce Pouches. By March, the CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health had “received reports of 136 confirmed cases, 345 probable cases, and 38 suspected cases for a total of 519 cases from 44 different states plus Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico through their reporting structure” involving recalled WanaBana, Schnucks, or Weis brand fruit puree products.
After testing by the FDA, the cinnamon ingredient in WanaBana Cinnamon Applesauce Pouches was found to have levels of toxic lead that were 2,000 times higher than proposed standards. This is alarming and has led to a number of WanaBana applesauce lawsuits in response to the frightening findings.
Lead Poisoning Health Concerns
People who have been exposed to lead may suffer various health effects, including but not limited to:
- Developmental delays and intellectual impairment, particularly in children – including hyperactivity
- Gastrointestinal issues, such as abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting
- Headaches
- High blood pressure
- Muscle and joint pain
- Neurological damage, impacting cognition, behavior, and learning abilities
- Other systemic effects, including cardiovascular, reproductive, and immune system dysfunction
- Pregnancy health concerns including premature birth
- Renal damage, affecting kidney function and overall health
- …and more
The World Health Organization warned that lead may “permanently affect children’s brain development, resulting in reduced intelligence quotient (IQ), behavioural changes including reduced attention span and increased antisocial behaviour, and reduced educational attainment. Lead exposure also causes anaemia, hypertension, renal impairment, immunotoxicity and toxicity to the reproductive organs.”
