In February 2023, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned consumers and healthcare professionals not to buy – and to stop using – EzriCare Artificial Tears or Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Tears due to potential bacterial contamination. The agency then recalled both products after numerous infections led to a number of deaths and eye removals. If you or a loved one used EzriCare Artificial Tears and suffered severe eye infections, vision loss, or other complications, you may be entitled to compensation with an EzriCare claim.
EzriCare Artificial Tears Cases
Recent reports have linked these over-the-counter eye drops to a dangerous bacterial outbreak that has caused serious harm to many users. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified a strain of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, in bottles of EzriCare Artificial Tears, leading to recalls and warnings for consumers.
“CDC laboratory testing identified the presence of the outbreak strain in opened EzriCare bottles with different lot numbers collected from two states,” a CDC Health Advisory noted. “Patients and healthcare providers should immediately discontinue using EzriCare artificial tears pending additional guidance from CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).”
In May 2023, the CDC reported that four people had died due to bacterial infections linked to contaminated eye drops.
“These were catastrophic and life-altering infections,” Maroya Spalding Walters, who oversees the CDC’s antimicrobial resistance team, said in an interview, according to NBC News.
