Accolade Pacemaker Issues
Boston Scientific recalled certain Accolade pacemaker models after reports of sudden device failure, and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) labeled the recall a Class I event, the most serious type of recall. Failure of the devices can lead to life-threatening complications, including interruption of pacing, fainting, heart failure, or even death.
“Boston Scientific Corporation is recalling devices due to a manufacturing issue that could cause the device to enter Safety Mode under certain conditions,” the FDA’s website noted.
“Safety Mode is an intended feature that activates during critical device component failures…once a device enters Safety Mode, it cannot be reversed and may cause these devices to only provide unipolar sensing and pacing, which can lead to serious injury or death due to interruption of pacing.”
The use of Accolade pacemakers with this malfunction can cause:
- Bradycardia (Abnormally slow heartbeats)
- Fainting episodes (syncope)

- Cardiac complications
