Spinal Stimulator Lawsuits

Spinal cord stimulators are implanted devices designed to alleviate chronic pain by delivering low levels of electricity directly to the spinal cord. Unfortunately, many manufacturers of spinal stimulators have failed to meet FDA regulations, such as maintaining the implantable generator’s temperature within safe limits and ensuring the wires are resistant to transmitting excessive energy, leading to injury and spinal stimulator lawsuits.

Spinal Stimulators: What Are They?

Spinal stimulator devices consist of leads, which are electrode wires, and a compact battery pack resembling a pacemaker. The leads are placed between the spinal cord and vertebrae (epidural space).

Patients receive a remote control that allows them to send electrical impulses through their body whenever they experience pain. This stimulation targets multiple muscle groups directly from the spine, potentially altering how the brain perceives pain.

Issues with Spinal Stimulators

The manufacturers of these devices, unfortunately, did not comply with FDA requirements that the implantable generator not surpass a certain temperature or that the wires resist transmitting too much energy. Spinal stimulator lawsuits also allege that these companies have neglected to report known issues with their devices.

In addition, misleading claims made by sales representatives promised patients permanent relief, while failing to disclose critical information such as the inability to undergo MRI scans after implantation.

In some cases, patients suffered severe consequences including burns. These spinal stimulators often provided insufficient pain relief and caused damage to the vagus nerve.
