Volunteers from Phillips Law Group and the Phillips Law Group Foundation supported the Special Olympics Arizona Bowl-A-Thon Bash event on August 16, with eight volunteers split into several teams to bowl alongside participants. For many, it was one of the most memorable community outreach opportunities our firm has taken part in.

Memories Made at Special Olympics Arizona Bowl-A-Thon Bash

At the Bowl-A-Thon Bash, volunteers had a chance to connect with both their coworkers and the Special Olympics participants who showed up ready to have a great time.

“The sponsors, donors, volunteers, and community participants were vital in creating an empowering and inclusive environment for all participants,” the Special Olympics Arizona Facebook page shared about the event. “We are incredibly grateful for partners like you.”

Sharon Mews, the Community Outreach Assistant at Phillips Law Group, explained that she was on a team with a couple of coworkers as well as two Special Olympics participants.

“We cheered them both on, and they loved giving high fives,” she revealed.

She also noted that Jason Flory, the Director of Client Experience, confided in one of the young members of his team that he wasn’t very good at bowling.

“The kid hugged Jason and responded, ‘It’s ok, just try your best,’” she said.

Fostering a ‘Good Rapport’ at Special Olympics Event

There were prizes given out to the bowlers at the Special Olympics Arizona Bowl-A-Thon Bash, but most of the participants were more interested in connecting with one another and the volunteers than they were in winning. Sharon noted that one volunteer started a conversation with a girl who had “an incredible sense of fashion,” and that they bonded over their matching nail polish colors.

“Every member on our team had a good rapport with the kids,” she said. “All of us were clearly enjoying interacting with the kids and families, and we had a ton of photos taken.”

In addition to prizes, pizza, soda, juice, donuts, and coffee were all available at the bowling event for volunteers and participants to enjoy. All in all, it was an incredibly well-organized and delightfully fun event that volunteers won’t forget anytime soon.

“Our team also made another memory together,” Sharon said. “We have the best group of volunteers that continue to build friendships with their co-workers with every event they participate in together.”

“I don’t know about the rest of my teammates, but this was an incredible treasured memory for me,” she added.
