Chicano Basketball League Best Kept Secret Tournament
This weekend, the Chicano Basketball League’s Best Kept Secret tournament will be held at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, Arizona. The event promises to showcase some of the best Latino basketball talent in Arizona and California.
Players in junior high up to seniors in high school will play in the tournament on March 23rd. Juan Roque, Intake Manager and Referral Coordinator at Phillips Law Group, is a big supporter of the cause and noted that Tierra del Sol Basketball/Chicano Basketball League is “near and dear” to his heart.
“Its purpose is to bring out the best in our youth, Juan said. “In basketball, many Latino players can be overlooked and even ignored, leaving them disgruntled and unmotivated to keep playing. That is a tragedy in itself as these kids will then end up on the streets getting into trouble that could cost them their freedom or even their lives.”
“The concept of creating a league designed to promote and highlight Chicano Basketball is a radical one because traditionally basketball is not a ‘Latino’ sport such as baseball or soccer,” he added. “However, in the Latino community, there is a huge following for basketball and this is just an avenue to capitalize on that.”
Chicano Basketball League is ‘Noble’ and ‘Worthwhile’ Cause
“As the League has grown and word has spread the League has expanded to have teams of all ages competing,” Juan noted. “Young players who maybe once shied away from trying out at their local high schools being pegged ‘not tall enough’ or ‘not good enough’ now have a place where they are good enough and able enough to not only compete but to achieve!”

How to Support the Chicano Basketball League Tournament
The Best Kept Secret tournament will be held at South Mountain Community College on Saturday, and doors open at 11:00 am.
A $10 donation per ticket is all you need to witness the exciting event, where there will be basketball, Folklórico dancing, and a low-rider exhibit as well. Games in the tournament will be played at noon, 1:15 pm, 2:15 pm, and 3:15 pm.
