Types of Motorcycles in Phoenix, AZ

Motorcycle safety has become a prevalent issue throughout the United States as the number of fatal motorcycle accidents reached an all-time high in 2008 and had doubled since 1999.

Throughout the state of Arizona there are more than 163,000 registered motorcycles and an additional 500 registered mopeds. There are many different types of motorcycles a person may ride and due to the high number of registered cycles and in Maricopa county specifically nearly 74,000 motorcycles are registered.

The higher the number of motorcycles on the road the higher the chances are of being involved in a collision with one. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, motorcycle accidents made up for 1.57% of all accidents reported throughout the state not including the number of moped accidents.

Types of Motorcycles

Although motorbikes are mainly thought to be two-wheeled vehicles there are also some three-wheeled bikes. Motorcycles may be classified into three initial categories including street bikes which are designed for paved roads and the most frequently used on a typical road. Off road bikes are typically used for motorcycle sports such as motocross.

Street bikes may be broken down into approximately seven different categories.

Sport Bike Lightweight frame and a high performance engine are common with this type of bike. Sport bikes tend to emphasize speed, braking, and cornering around roads. Popular sport bike brands include Yamaha, BMW, and Ducati.

Cruiser Defined by their riding position which places the feet forward and hands higher up so that the rider is leaning back, cruisers date back to the 1930s. Sometimes known as chopper, cruisers are often customizable and used for cruising rather than extended trips. One of the most popular cruiser brands is Harley-Davidson.

Touring Specifically made for riding long distances, touring bikes have large displaced engines, large capacity fuel tanks, small windshields, and a seat situated in an upright position for comfortable riding. Some bikes have enough space for luggage and can accommodate a passenger.

Sport Touring Combining the attributed of sport and touring bikes, these motorcycles are a bit more laid back, are lighter than touring bikes, and often have higher performance engines. These types of bikes can often also accommodate a passenger and luggage.

Standard General purpose motorcycles are known as standard bikes and some may consider a standard bike a great starter motorcycle.

Dual-Sport Also known as on/off road bikes, these types of motorcycles can be used both on paved and unpaved roads. These bikes look similar to dirt bikes but may have mirrors, lights, and signals that allow them to be driven on public roads.

Arizona Motorcycle Laws

The state of Arizona has not yet enacted a universal helmet law, therefore only riders under the age of 17 are required to wear helmets while on a motorcycle. The partial helmet law has saved countless lives though since its inception in the mid-1970s.
