Some former detainees have come forward with allegations of assault and systemic abuse at Camp Barrett and other California juvenile detention facilities. These traumatic experiences can lead to lifelong emotional, psychological, and physical consequences.

As just one example, in a lawsuit filed in late 2024, a boy who was detained in the San Diego County juvenile hall years ago alleged he was sexually assaulted by two different probation officers on many occasions, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The boy claimed “he was sexually abused in 2012 when he was only 16 while serving two court-ordered, months-long stints at Camp Barrett, a county-run juvenile detention facility in rural Alpine,” the outlet noted. He alleged he was abused “four separate times” by a female probation officer, and after being ordered back to Camp Barrett for four more months when he was still 16, he said he was sexually assaulted again by a different, male probation officer.

“His abusers used their positions of power over Plaintiff to force him to comply with their demands,” the lawsuit stated.
