A panel of judges established a federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) for lawsuits involving AngioDynamics port catheters in early October 2024. The AngioDynamics port catheter lawsuit MDL could be a game-changer for streamlining case management and bringing clarity to the claims.

More Than 50 AngioDynamics Port Catheter Claims Pending

Currently, more than 50 product liability lawsuits are pending against AngioDynamics throughout the federal court system. A federal panel of judges has now put into place an MDL for all of these port catheter lawsuits filed in U.S. District Courts throughout the country.

The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation decided to establish the AngioDynamics lawsuit MDL before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. Judge Jinsook Ohta is set to oversee pretrial proceedings.

What Do AngioDynamics Port Catheters Do?

These devices, commonly used for long-term treatment delivery – such as chemotherapy – are alleged to have defects that pose significant health risks. Plaintiffs claim the catheters develop microfractures due to excessive barium sulfate content, leading to dangerous complications, including infections, blood clots, and catheter breakage.

Lawsuits against AngioDynamics in recent years have alleged that the catheters used in Smart Port implantable venous access devices had problems with fissuring, cracking, fracturing, and infections, and more as a result of manufacturing defects as well.

Upcoming Trials

As more of these cases are filed, bellwether trials will help determine the direction of future litigation. Ultimately, this consolidation is intended to simplify case management and provide a more transparent understanding of the claims.

For those affected by faulty AngioDynamics catheters, the establishment of this MDL is an important step toward accountability and potential compensation. As the litigation progresses, individuals impacted by these defective medical devices and their legal representation will be closely watching the outcomes of early trials.
