Types of Strokes

As strokes are so common throughout the United States and elsewhere in the world, medical professionals have categorized them into different types due to their symptoms. In any case, strokes can alter the life of an individual and cause serious damages to the brain if they are not cared for immediately.

Some common types of strokes include:

Ischemic Stroke

These types of strokes are responsible for 85 percent of all strokes. Ischemic strokes occur when the arteries of the brain become blocked or narrowed, which cause the blood flow to the brain to become drastically reduced, also known as ischemia. There are two types of ischemic strokes which include:

  1. Thrombotic Stroke This type of stroke occurs when a blood clot or thrombus forms in one or more of the arteries which supply the brain with blood. These are typically caused by a fatty deposited build up in the arteries causing the blood flow to reduce.
  2. Embolic Stroke This type of stroke occurs when a blood clot or another form of debris forms away from the brain and is carried through the blood stream until it becomes lodged in the narrow arteries of the brain. This form of blood clot is known as an embolus.

Hemorrhagic Stroke

A hemorrhagic stroke happens when a blood vessel to the brain begins to leak or ruptures. This can be caused by high blood pressure or weak spots in the blood vessels. Hemorrhagic stokes come in two different forms which include:

  1. Intracerebral Hemorrhage – This occurs when a blood vessel in the brain burst and begins spilling into the surrounding brain tissues, causing damage to the brain cells. Some causes of intracerebral hemorrhaging include; high blood pressure, vascular malformations, trauma, blood thinning medications, and other conditions which cause hemorrhaging.
  2. Subarachnoid Hemorrhage This occurs when an artery at or near the surface of the brain bursts and spills into the area between the surface of the brain and the skull. This type of hemorrhage is typically signaled by a sudden headache. This is typically caused by a rupture of an aneurysm in the brain.

Transient Ischemic Attack

A transient ischemic attack is referred to as a mini-stroke due to the fact that symptoms are similar to those individuals have during a stroke. This occurs when blood supply is temporarily decreased to part of the brain and typically lasts less than five minutes. A TIA is caused when a blood clot or debris is blocking the blood flow to the brain, while it does not leave lasting symptoms as the blockage is only temporary.

It is highly recommended to seek immediate medical attention even if all of your stroke symptoms seem to be cleared. This medical attention can prevent a larger stroke from occurring down the road and also provide you with medical documents, which are needed to receive workers compensation.
