hit-and-run-pedestrian-accidentA tragic hit-and-run collisioninvolving a pedestrian has left a Tempe woman battling serious, life-threatening injuries.

According to officers from the Tempe Police Department (TPD), the accident occurred at the intersection of Priest Drive and Broadway Road shortly before 11:00 p.m. on Saturday night. Lieutenant Mike Pooley of the TPD stated the woman was attempting to cross Broadway Road at the crosswalk, but she was attempting to do so against a red light.

At that time, a light-colored car struck the woman and then fled westbound on Broadway. The driver of the vehicle made no attempt to stop at any time during or after the accident. Police were called to the scene, as well as emergency medical technicians who transported the woman to a local hospital.

Authorities are currently searching for the driver of the car, and they have asked Arizona citizens to assist their cause by looking for a light-colored car with extensive damage to its front-end and windshield.

In Arizona, vehicles must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians when they are in a crosswalk or if they are approaching a roadway closely enough to constitute a danger. However, pedestrians may not suddenly enter a crosswalk into the path of an oncoming vehicle that is so close it is unable to yield.

Regardless of the situation, all hit-and-run drivers can be held accountable, as the very act of “hitting and running” is prohibited by law. In Arizona, you are legally obligated to stop if you are involved in any type of accident, including car-versus-pedestrian accidents, truck accidents or accidents in which your vehicle strikes a building, tree or guardrail.

Failure to stop after a collision can be considered “leaving the scene of an accident,” which can lead to criminal charges. These charges often come with serious consequences, especially if someone was injured or died as a result of the accident.
