Nissan Recalling 3.2M Vehicles for Airbag Problems

Nissan has announced the recall of 3.2 million vehicles in the U.S. due to malfunctions which could cause airbags not to work properly during a crash.

Defective occupant sensing systems, which detect if a passenger is sitting in the front passenger seat and whether the passenger is a child or adult, could cause airbags to deploy or not deploy incorrectly. Approximately 622,000 Nissan Sentras from model years 2013 to 2016 are being recalled due to a defect that may cause airbags to inflate in an accident when they shouldn’t, such as when a child is occupying the seat. Nissan has stated they know of a minimum of three accidents where moderate injuries resulted from the airbags failing to deploy correctly.

In these vehicles, the seat belt bracket of the front passenger seat can become deformed when used to secure a child’s seat. This deformity could cause the airbags not to turn off even though they should; a fix has not yet been devised. Nissan is warning vehicle owners never to install child restraint systems in the front passenger seat.

Airbags May Not Deploy When Needed

Other vehicles are being recalled because the faulty sensing systems may not sense a passenger is occupying the seat, keeping airbags from deploying even though they should ”“ affected vehicles include:

• 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima
• 2013-2016 Nissan NV200, Leaf, Sentra, and Altima
• 2013-2017 Nissan Pathfinder
• 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti Q50 and Infiniti QX60
• 2015-2016 Nissan Murano and Chevrolet City Express
• 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue
• 2013 Infiniti JX35

Nissan has announced that these vehicles will be repaired free of charge. Owners will be notified of the issue, but there is no timeline as to when the manufacturer will begin contacting owners or completing recall repairs.
