BMW has recalled just under 400,000 vehicles in the United States due to a dangerous defect that car owners need to be aware of.

394,029 vehicles are “potentially involved” in the BMW recall, according to a safety report from BMW of North America, LLC. The recall is due to a major problem with airbag inflators manufactured by Takata

BMW Recall: What Happened?

According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the original steering wheel on impacted BMW cars may have been replaced by owners with a sport or M-sport steering wheel with PSDI-5 inflators that use ammonium nitrate and could, with time, lead to “overly aggressive combustion,” CBS News reported.

“In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion material, which may result in injury or death to vehicle occupants,” BMW said in its recall report.

Notifications to owners will be mailed on August 23, 2024.

Takata Airbag Recalls

Previously, millions of defective Takata airbags were recalled, and by the end of 2022, 11 million were yet to be replaced. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) once called the Takata airbags recall “the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history,”

By early 2023, the Takata airbags recall had grown to include 67 million airbags from more than 42 million vehicles across the country. The NHTSA has reported that at least 400 people in the United States have allegedly been injured by exploding Takata airbag inflators, and confirmed that, unfortunately, 27 people had been killed in related incidents.

Thankfully, in the safety report shared by BMW in early July 2024, BMW noted that it “has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries, in the US, that may be related to this issue.”
