Louisiana Youth Residential Treatment Center Claims

Recent investigations and lawsuits have revealed alarming patterns of sexual abuse, physical violence, and emotional trauma in youth treatment facilities across the country, including in Louisiana.

Staff members, who are entrusted with the care and protection of minors, have been accused of exploiting their positions of power to abuse vulnerable residents. In some cases, facility administrators failed to properly screen employees, ignored warning signs of abuse, or actively covered up reports of misconduct. These systemic failures have left countless survivors with lasting emotional and psychological scars.

According to a Senate committee report released in June 2024, children in residential treatment facilities operated by some of the United States’ largest behavioral health companies “are at risk for sexual abuse, dangerous physical restraints, and overmedication, problems compounded by weak oversight and a system that ‘optimizes profit over the wellbeing and safety of children,’” NBC News reported.

Senator Mike Crapo, the ranking member of the committee, said at a hearing about the report’s findings at the time, “To the victims in the audience and around the country who’ve suffered abuse and neglect in residential treatment, your experience is entirely unacceptable.”

“Facilities entrusted with caring for our most vulnerable youth must be held to the highest standards and subject to routine oversight.”
