Michigan Youth Residential Treatment Center Sexual Abuse Lawsuits

The team at Phillips Law Group is committed to advocating for survivors of sexual abuse in institutional settings, including Michigan youth residential treatment centers. These facilities, designed to provide care and support for vulnerable youth, have far too often become the setting for unspeakable acts of abuse and exploitation. If you or a loved one suffered sexual abuse in a Michigan youth residential treatment center, our experienced attorneys are here to help you seek justice, accountability, and compensation.

Michigan Youth Residential Treatment Center Sexual Assault Claims

Sexual abuse in youth treatment centers is a devastating violation of trust. Perpetrators may include staff members, counselors, or even other residents, and the trauma inflicted can have lifelong physical, emotional, and psychological consequences.

Survivors of this type of abuse often face challenges such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, and difficulty forming healthy relationships. Holding these facilities accountable is critical not only for the survivors but also to prevent future abuse and ensure safer environments for all children.

In many states, the law provides legal avenues for survivors to pursue justice. Our firm specializes in representing clients in personal injury lawsuits, including survivors of sexual abuse in civil lawsuits. We can help you or your loved one seek compensation for medical expenses, therapy, pain and suffering, and other damages related to abuse in a Michigan youth residential treatment center.

We want to hold negligent facilities accountable for failing to protect the children in their care. Whether the abuse occurred recently or decades ago, you may still be able to seek justice.

Detroit Behavioral Facility Abuse Case

In one shocking example, as recently as March 2024, former patients of a Detroit behavioral facility sued the establishment, which is now closed, “alleging systemic sexual and physical abuse of underage residents over two decades,” according to The Detroit News.

The case was filed against the Detroit Behavioral Institute but also named the institute’s parent company, Acadia Healthcare. An attorney involved in the case said the company owns more than 250 youth residential treatment facilities in the United States, the outlet noted.

“Accusations against the facility include grooming, touching, and rape, attorneys representing the former residents say,” the Detroit News reported. “The lawsuit accuses a particular supervisor of abusing more than 40 patients. Staff members who did not allegedly abuse patients themselves are accused of coercing victims into silence, including through physical assault and calling victims ‘snitches’ and ‘rats’ for speaking up.”

It’s that exact sort of abuse in Michigan youth residential treatment facilities – and the culture of shame and silence around this type of abuse – that our firm wants to help end and assist survivors in seeking justice.
