On July 31, four volunteers from Phillips Law Group helped host a MANA House karaoke party that delighted the residents the organization serves. MANA (Marines, Army, Navy, Airforce) House provides transitional housing and other services to homeless and formerly homeless veterans, many of whom got to enjoy the summer karaoke event.
Volunteers from Phillips Law Group – which has an ongoing, successful outreach partnership with MANA House and loves to work with the veteran population it serves – brought pizza for residents to enjoy and also provided haircuts to anyone who wanted one.
Sharon Mews, the Community Outreach Assistant at Phillips Law Group, brought her newly fostered chihuahua Bambi to the karaoke party as well, and the veterans loved interacting with her.
“She was a hit,” Sharon said. “One Veteran remarked, ‘We don’t get many opportunities to interact with dogs.’”
Several people, including Sharon and Rachel, the Coordinator for MANA House, sang songs like “Dancing Queen” and “Brown Eyes Blue” for the veterans in attendance. But most importantly, a few veterans participated themselves!
“They were having fun,” Sharon noted. “They tried to get me to sing ‘Killing Me Softly,’ but I didn’t think that was in my range!”
Phillips Law Group volunteers also provided several prizes as part of a raffle, including 4 signed Arizona Cardinals footballs. While Sharon admitted she knows “zero” about sports, the veterans seemed to appreciate the items, which is what really matters.
