Youth sports coaches have a duty not only to help young people learn how to compete safely and fairly, but also to ensure that those young people are safe from any physical, psychological, and sexual abuse. Sadly, there is no shortage of stories about adults affiliated with youth sports programs breaching that duty and knowingly abusing children in their care, with Nicolas Morton being among the most recent and egregious examples.
Although criminal proceedings against the former baseball coach at Packer Collegiate Institute are still ongoing, the parents and guardians of children who suffered sexual abuse from that coach have filed many civil lawsuits against him. If your child suffered sexual abuse from Mr. Morton, a sexual abuse attorney from Phillips Law Group can help you explore and take full advantage of your right to pursue compensation through a Nicolas Morton sexual abuse case.
Sexual Misconduct at Packer Collegiate Institute
Nicolas Morton was first employed at Packer Collegiate Institute in 2019, after previously attending the school as a student, and worked as a financial aid and admissions officer as well as a school baseball coach until his dismissal in August 2024. In that five-year period, Mr. Morton allegedly engaged in sexual misconduct with at least seven boys between the ages of 12 and 14, who have stated that Mr. Morton touched them inappropriately, made sexually inappropriate comments, and coerced them through various means into exposing themselves to him.
In October 2024, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced that Nicolas Morton had been arrested and charged with 20 counts of crimes involving sexual misconduct against a child, including both first-degree and third-degree sexual assault, forcible touching, unlawful imprisonment, and endangering the welfare of a child. Mr. Morton has entered a plea of “not guilty” to all 20 counts, and as of May 2025, the case has not yet gone to trial.
Who Can File Suit Against Nicolas Morton?
Any parent or legal guardian of a child subjected to sexual abuse by Nicolas Morton while attending Packer Collegiate Institute or while participating in the travel baseball team Mr. Morton coached may have grounds to file suit on their child’s behalf. Through a successful lawsuit or settlement demand, it may be possible to recover for both economic and non-economic forms of harm that can be traced directly back to Mr. Morton’s unlawful acts, including medical bills, lost working capacity, physical pain, and emotional distress.
Importantly, the fact that criminal proceedings against Mr. Morton are still ongoing does not mean it is not possible to file a civil suit against him in the meantime, and in fact, it may be possible to hold him—as well as the Packer Collegiate Institute and any other person or organization which facilitated his abuse—civilly liable for damages even if he is ultimately not convicted of criminal wrongdoing. A skilled legal professional can discuss the best route forward for a particular family during a confidential consultation.
