salmonella outbreakMore than 6.5 million pounds of raw beef products has been recalled today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) due to an outbreak of salmonella.

The recall was issued after JBS Tolleson Inc., an Arizona-based meat processing plant, was identified as the common supplier of beef products found in reported salmonella outbreak cases.

From August 5 to September 6, there have been 57 patients across 16 different states that have gotten sick with salmonella. Health care officials were first informed last month of an outbreak after eight patients helped initially identify the source of the outbreak.

People affected by salmonella can have a high fever, abdominal cramps, severe diarrhea and dehydration. These symptoms usually develop within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated products. While the majority of people can recover after a week, more severe cases require hospitalization due to weakened immune systems commonly in young children and elderly adults.

Consumers who purchased these products are advised not to eat them and should be thrown away or returned. The recalled beef products were found to be packaged between July 26 and September 7.
