If you purchased some weighted groceries or bagged fruit at Walmart between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024, the massive retailer may owe you money. Thanks to a Walmart class action settlement, millions of customers could be eligible to claim funds – but if you’re one of those customers, you’ve got limited time to claim the cash.

Walmart Class Action Settlement: What Happened?

A class action lawsuit filed in October 2022 claims that shoppers at Walmart in the United States and Puerto Rico who bought “certain sold-by-weight meat and seafood as well as select citrus sold in bulk bags paid more than the lowest price advertised in stores,” the Associated Press reported.

Walmart will pay $45 million to settle the litigation but is not admitting wrongdoing in the process.

“We will continue providing our customers everyday low prices to help them save money on the products they want and need,” a spokesperson for Walmart stated. “We still deny the allegations, however, we believe a settlement is in the best interest of both parties.”

It’s a considerable amount of money, and a small portion of it could go to you if you act quickly.

People who purchased “certain sold-by-weight meat, poultry, pork, and seafood products (referred to as “Weighted Goods”) and certain organic oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, and navel oranges sold in bulk in mesh or plastic bags (referred to as “Bagged Citrus”)” at Walmart allegedly paid more than the lowest in-store advertised price for those specific items, and may now be able to claim a share of the Walmart class action settlement money, according to the settlement administrator’s website.

You must submit a claim to get a payment, and no documentation is required to be eligible. Even without receipts, you can make a claim.

You can choose to submit your claim form online or download the claim form to begin the process. Alternatively, you can call the Claims Administrator to receive a paper copy of the form and mail it to the Claims Administrator.

If you want to retain your right to potentially sue Walmart about related legal claims, you can also choose to opt out of the settlement. For all other options, visit the settlement administrator’s website for more information.

How Much Will the Walmart Settlement Payments Be?

Payments will range depending on each claim, the Associated Press noted. For example, consumers without proof of purchase may receive between $10 and $25, depending on how many eligible products they claim to have purchased during the settlement class period.

However, customers with receipts or other documentation could be entitled to receive 2 percent of the total cost for each item they purchased  — with the potential to get up to $500.

Claimants who are approved to receive a share of the Walmart class action settlement money can choose to receive their payments via ACH, a virtual pre-paid MasterCard, Venmo, or Zelle.

Walmart Settlement Deadline

The deadline for submitting a claim form is June 5, 2024, at 11:59pm PT. Then, a final approval hearing is set for June 12 this year.

If you believe you’re eligible to claim money from the Walmart class action settlement, you should gather any documentation you may have and make a claim without delay.
