Mesa Intersection Closed After Deadly Hit-and-Run Crash

MESA, AZ – Officials with the Mesa Police Department closed a busy intersection after a pedestrian died in a Tuesday morning hit-and-run.

According to AZ Family, the crash occurred close to the intersection of Alma School Road and Isabelle Avenue near U.S. 60.

Police believe the driver struck both the pedestrian and an electricity box, causing a power outage in the area. The unidentified suspect then fled the scene in a Ford Ranger pickup truck.

Information on the identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family members.

An investigation is underway into the circumstances leading up to the crash.

Update: Driver Arrested in Connection to Fatal Mesa Hit-and-Run

MESA, AZ – Mesa police have a suspect in custody following a fatal hit-and-run that resulted in the death of a male pedestrian early Tuesday morning.

According to ABC 15, the crash occurred near Isabella Avenue and Alma School Road at about 6:00 a.m.

Police say a Ford Ranger driven by Joseph Eckert ran onto the sidewalk and struck 81-year-old Larry Lans before colliding with an electric box and continuing down the roadway. Lans was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Investigators were able to track down the owner of the Ford Ranger, who identified the suspect as an acquaintance. Eckert was taken into custody after admitting to striking the power box but did not remember hitting Lans. He is being charged with fleeing the scene of a fatal crash.
