The plane crash in Washington, D.C. happened around 9 p.m. as both aircraft approached Runway 33 at Reagan National Airport. Sadly, both aircraft crashed into the Potomac River after the collision and there were no survivors.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the helicopter crew involved in the crash was “fairly experienced” and was doing an “annual proficiency training flight” when the collision occurred. He noted that the crash is being reviewed by “an investigative team from our aviation safety center.”
A source told NBC News that a preliminary FAA report on the collision noted that staffing at the Reagan Washington National Airport air traffic control tower that night was “not normal,” but it’s still unclear exactly what factors led to this tragedy.
Passengers on the American Airlines flight involved in the crash included more than a dozen people returning from a training camp after the conclusion of the 2025 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas, the outlet noted.
