The Archdiocese of Washington, which includes Catholic entities across Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George’s, and St. Mary’s Counties, has faced several cases of clergy sexual abuse allegations. Clergy abuse cases may include allegations against priests, teachers, and staff within Catholic parishes, schools, and Catholic Charities programs.
For decades, across many states, survivors endured abuse while the Church failed to protect them – covering up crimes, transferring predators, and denying accountability. Phillips Law Group is investigating abuse within the Archdiocese of Washington, and we want you to know that you have the right to demand justice, no matter how long ago the harm occurred.
Archdiocese of Washington Abuse Cases
Survivors of sexual abuse within the Archdiocese of Washington may be able to file civil claims against the Archdiocese and affiliated institutions, including parishes and diocesan clergy like priests, deacons, or other religious leaders. Claims may also be brought against Catholic schools if an assault by teachers, coaches, or staff took place, or against Catholic Charities entitles including youth programs, shelters, or outreach services.
In one heartbreaking example, an individual said he was assaulted by an unnamed priest at St. Jerome Parish in Hyattsville in the 1960s, according to NBC Washington. He claimed that he was brought to the priest’s bedroom and molested when he was around 10 years old.
“I couldn’t tell nobody. My mother was a devout Catholic. Who was she going to believe? Who was anybody going to believe?” the man said.
There have been far too many cases like this involving the Archdiocese of Washington. Shockingly, the Archdiocese actually filed a legal challenge to the Child Victims Act in 2023. That Maryland law allows child abuse survivors to bring civil claims “regardless of when the abuse happened,” NBC Washington noted.
The Church continues to fight survivors in court rather than fully atoning for its failures, and our firm believes it’s long past time that they face justice.
