The city of Dalton, Georgia filed a federal lawsuit against Shaw Industries on December 10, 2024, over widespread PFAS contamination concerns in municipal sewage systems. Plus, Mohawk Industries is also undertaking legal action against 3M after alleging the company hid information about harmful PFAS chemicals involved in its carpet manufacturing. If you or a loved one suffered harm as a result of contaminated water linked to these cases, you may be able to pursue a Georgia PFAS lawsuit.
Georgia PFAS Cases
In a lawsuit filed by Mohawk Industries, based in Georgia, against 3M and other chemical manufacturers, Mohawk claimed the chemical companies “concealed and misrepresented material information regarding the environmental and health risks of PFAS chemicals” when it sold “treatment products” to Mohawk for many years.
Additionally, the city of Dalton filed a lawsuit against Shaw Industries, claiming the large employer for the city contaminated its sewage system with PFAS chemicals – also known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, often referred to as “forever chemicals” due to their persistence in the environment and the human body.
Mohawk Industries has paid more than $100 million to settle water lawsuits and to fund water treatment facilities in communities impacted by its hazardous treatment products used in carpet manufacturing. But the company is claiming that it did not know how harmful the chemicals it used in treatment products sold to the company by 3M and other chemical manufacturers were to people and the environment.
At Phillips Law Group, we are closely monitoring this case and are committed to helping individuals and communities affected by PFAS exposure seek justice and compensation.
The Dangers of PFAS
PFAS are a group of synthetic chemicals used in a wide range of industrial and consumer products, including non-stick cookware, water-repellent fabrics, and firefighting foams. These chemicals have been linked to serious health risks, including cancer, thyroid disease, developmental issues in children, and more.
Despite mounting evidence of their dangers, PFAS have been widely used for decades, leading to widespread contamination of water supplies, soil, and air. Unfortunately, according to The Pew Charitable Trusts, these chemicals are so prevalent they’re found in the blood of 97 percent of Americans.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “studies of laboratory animals given large amounts of PFAS indicate that some PFAS may affect growth and development,” and those same studies “indicate PFAS may affect reproduction, thyroid function, the immune system, and injure the liver.”
This Georgia PFAS litigation is part of a broader wave of litigation against companies responsible for manufacturing and distributing PFAS, as communities and businesses seek accountability for the harm caused by these toxic substances.
