PHOENIX, AZ – One person was killed, and two others were injured in a wrong-way crash that happened on Loop 101 in North Phoenix early Saturday morning.
According to ABC 15, the initial crash occurred just after 3 a.m. when a white passenger vehicle heading west in the eastbound lanes of Loop 101 slammed into an oncoming SUV near 19th Avenue.
While officers were investigating the scene of the initial head-on collision, a red sports car careened into the rear of the SUV at a high rate of speed.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of both the SUV and the sports car suffered unknown injuries.
While authorities believe alcohol impairment played a role in both collisions, an investigation is ongoing. Loop 101 remained closed for several hours, reopening at approximately 9 a.m. that morning.
