Every year, the Arizona Department of Transportation releases motor vehicle crash facts for the state. AZDOT recently released information on motor vehicle accidents in 2022 and reported that one person is injured every ten minutes in Arizona crashes.

Arizona Crashes in 2022

The information included in the Arizona Department of Transportation’s results are compiled from Arizona Traffic Crash Reports submitted to the AZDOT by state, county, city, tribal, and other law enforcement agencies.

In 2022, there were 119,991 total Arizona crashes, resulting in 1,294 fatalities. While the number of accidents was down 1.25 percent as compared to 2021, the number of deaths increased by 8.56 percent.

According to the report put together by the AZDOT, approximately 3.55 persons were killed each day in crashes in Arizona last year. One person was killed every 6 hours and 46 minutes, and one person was injured every 10 minutes and 2 seconds.

Those facts are pretty startling, and the information only gets more alarming from there.

Arizona Crashes at a Glance

While alcohol-related crashes accounted for 4.57 percent of all crashes in Arizona in 2022, they accounted for 17.15 percent of all fatal accidents. The number of alcohol-related fatalities was actually down almost 12 percent last year, but the numbers are still far too high.

Of all pedestrian crashes, 16.05 percent were fatal in the Grand Canyon State last year. Pedestrian fatalities were up more than 16 percent in 2022, which is a disturbing increase.

All in all, there were 144 persons injured every day in Arizona crashes in 2022.

Holiday Accidents in Arizona

The Department of Transportation’s report also specifically looked at crashes over holidays and holiday weekends in Arizona and found that 15 people died on the days they counted toward New Year’s Day and 13 died in crashes in the state over the Labor Day holiday.

When it comes to these popular celebrations, Thanksgiving saw the deadliest period for motor vehicle crashes in Arizona – 16 people died in accidents over the holiday.

Deadliest Counties in Arizona

The report also broke down Arizona crashes by geographical location. Maricopa County had the highest number of crashes in 2022 – 85,970 – and the highest number of people killed – 660. It also was home to the most injuries in motor vehicle accidents – 36,035 total.

The AZDOT noted that “Urban Crashes in Arizona (103,571) accounted for 86.32 percent of all crashes” last year, and “accounted for 65.79 percent of all Fatal Crashes (775) occurring in 2022.”
