While impairment was not a factor in yesterday’s fatal crash in Glendale, police are still investigating the possibility that distracted driving may have contributed to the accident.
Shortly before 7:30 a.m., the driver of a Lexus made a left-hand turn onto Grand Avenue, directly into the path of an oncoming Honda driven by a 24-year-old Phoenix man.
The initial police investigation determined that the Honda was heading northwest on Grand Avenue when the driver of the Lexus made a left turn off of 57th Drive and immediately cut-off the Honda.
The Phoenix man was killed on impact. The driver of the Lexus sustained minor injuries and did not require immediate transportation to a local hospital for treatment.
The collision closed Grand Avenue from 61st Avenue to 55th Avenue for the majority of the morning, as firefighters, police officers and other emergency responders tended to the victims and analyzed the crash scene.
According to Glendale police, the driver of the Lexus remained at the crash site and cooperated with the investigation. It was at this time that police concluded the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the accident.
However, an investigation is still ongoing, and police have yet to rule out driver distraction as a possible cause of the deadly collision. According to a study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, 80 percent of all auto accidents are caused by driver distraction.
While cell phone use is the most common cause of distracted driving, talking to a passenger, using a GPS or reaching for an object inside a vehicle are also forms of distracted driving.
