Ikea Offering Repairs Kits for Deadly Drawers & Chests

Ikea is providing free anchors for its Malm drawers and chests after two children were killed when the furniture pieces fell on top of them.

The furniture pieces are approximately 23 to 29.5 inches tall, which leaves toddlers and babies in danger should the drawers be pulled out accidently or tip over. This is not a recall, however, Ikea is providing consumers with the fixes to ensure not one more person is injured or killed.

According to Ikea, 27 million people purchased these drawers and chests. In conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the retailers decided to offer a free kit that includes replacement tip-over restraints, wall-anchoring hardware, and instructions on properly securing the furniture.

In both cases where children were fatally injured, the drawers were not secured to the wall. In February 2014, a two-year-old boy died after the chest drawer in his home tipped over and pinned him between drawers and bed. In another case, just months later, a 23-month-old died after the chest drawers tipped over onto the child.

Ikea and the CPSC have received 14 reports of Malm drawers tipping over, at least four injuries have also been reported. Furthermore, since 1989, Ikea knows of three deaths that were attributed to tip-overs of other models of Ikea chests and drawers.

The CPSC and Ikea are urging consumers to securely anchor these pieces to the wall as soon as possible.
