FDA Issues Safety Alerts for Cholesterol Drugs

Lipitor, the worlds best-selling prescription medication, has been linked to side effects such as increased blood sugar levels and memory loss. Patients, especially women, who have taken statins like Lipitor, Crestor and Zocor are at increased risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.

The FDA added the new safety alerts in 2012 after several studies showed that some patients that used statins had an increased risk of higher blood sugar levels, leading to a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Labels for statins now include warnings about cognitive effects, after patients have reported memory loss and confusion while using the medication.

More than 29 million people in the United States have been prescribed Lipitor, which suggests that thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of patients may have been affected by these side effects.
