If it seems like a new Depo-Provera lawsuit update is announced every other week, that speculation may not actually be that far from the truth. In January 2025 alone, a number of Depo-Provera updates have already manifested, and one of the biggest in this ongoing litigation is coming at the end of the month. That’s when a hearing will be held to determine if multidistrict litigation (MDL) will be created in regard to the many Depo-Provera lawsuits that have already been filed and that the courts may anticipate will be filed in the future.
January 2025 Depo-Provera Lawsuit Update

Some plaintiffs are looking to create a Depo-Provera lawsuit MDL that would see similar complaints filed throughout the federal court system be consolidated before a judge in one district. On January 30, 2025, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) will hold a hearing to decide whether this MDL will be created and in which state the federal lawsuits will be consolidated.
Although the plaintiffs’ attorneys want the lawsuits to be overseen by California federal courts, Pfizer wants the MDL to be based in the Southern District of New York instead. Previously, Pfizer and other defendants noted they would agree to an MDL being formed, so now it just seems to be a matter of where the lawsuits will be consolidated and when the MDL could be created.
Depo-Provera Lawsuit Information

Some research shows that the use of Depo-Provera may have a potential link to a heightened risk for brain tumors. In a study published in the British Medical Journal in March 2024, a potential link was discovered between Depo-Provera meningiomas, specifically. That research found that the use of Depo-Provera increased the risk of intracranial meningioma 5.6-fold if used for more than a year.
The study indicated that long-term use of progestogens such as medrogestone, medroxyprogesterone acetate, and promegestone was linked to a higher risk of developing meningiomas, but an increased risk associated with other hormonal treatments like progesterone, dydrogesterone, and some types of hormonal intrauterine devices (IUDs) was not discovered.
Depo-Provera lawsuits involve whether or not Pfizer knew about the possible dangers associated with using the drug but failed to warn consumers. Thousands of women use this injectable drug as a form of birth control, and if there is a higher risk of intracranial meningioma after using it long-term that Pfizer knew about, patients deserve justice for not being appropriately warned and for their pain and suffering if they ultimately developed meningiomas.
Depo-Provera Litigation: What’s Next?

The hearing that will determine if multidistrict litigation will be created for Depo-Provera lawsuits is scheduled for January 30, 2025, at the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. U.S. Courthouse in Miami, Florida. The MDL could be created in February 2025 and people who have been harmed by this drug will be that much closer to securing justice
