Ultrasound Gel Bacterial Contamination

According to the Associated Press, U.S. marshals seized several lots of ultrasound gel from the company Pharmaceutical Innovations after the gel tested positive for bacterial contamination. The Food and Drug administration (FDA) said that the Other-Sonic gel tested positive for dangerous strains of bacteria. The purpose of the gel is to enhance ultrasound images. At least 16 people at one hospital were infected by the bacteria from the product.

Medical professionals are urged not use containers of the gel labeled: 060111, 090111 and 120111. Physicians should identify and assess patients who have been treated with the contaminated gel.
