Johnson & Johnson to Stop Sale of Talc Baby Powder
May 22, 2020
Earlier this week, Johnson & Johnson decided to discontinue the sale of Baby Powder in North America. U.S. and Canadian retailers can sell their existing stock of Baby Powder, and there will be no more after that.
This is a major victory for public health, according to U.S. Congressional Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, who led Congress’ investigation.
Johnson & Johnson claimed the decision was based on a decline in demand for the product along with misinformation about safety and a “barrage of litigation advertising.”
Johnson & Johnson has faced thousands of lawsuits in recent years (19,400 as of March). These claims were filed by people who claim their use of Baby Powder caused them to develop cancer. In one case, the jury awarded $4.7 billion to 22 women who had ovarian cancer.
Three years ago, a jury in Missouri awarded a $110 million verdict to a 62-year-old who had used Baby Powder for four decades. Four years ago, a St. Louis jury awarded $72 million to the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer. Doctors suspected her use of Johnson & Johnson’s talcum-powder based products was the primary cause of her ovarian cancer, as they could not find a genetic or environmental cause for her cancer.
Back in 2018, an investigation by Reuters revealed Johnson & Johnson had known the talc it used in Baby Powder contained asbestos. An investigation by Congress confirmed this finding earlier in 2020.
Despite courtroom victories for many cancer patients and families of cancer patients who died, along with numerous studies linking talc-based products to ovarian cancer, Johnson & Johnson has continued to defend the safety of Baby Powder.
