Teens Seriously Hurt When Car Crashes into Power Pole
July 26, 2016
Two people were injured in an accident early Friday morning when a 19-year-old driver crashed a car carrying four passengers into a power pole at the 29th Street and Beverly Lane intersection. The driver may have been drinking alcohol before the crash and could face charges, according to police.
The driver and a 16-year-old passenger were taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition. The three other 15-year-old passengers sustained non-life threatening injuries.
The driver’s parents went to the scene of the accident and told authorities that their son had taken the car without permission.
The crash caused power lines to fall to the street, knocking out power for nearly 2,800 people in Phoenix. Crews closed the road while clearing power lines and worked into the early morning hours to restore power.
The crash is still under investigation.
Drunk Driving Continues to be a Problem
Friday’s accident may not have resulted in any deaths, but drunk driving causes thousands of deaths every year on American roads.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 9,967 people died in drunk driving car accidents in 2014, which is about 28 people per day.
Drunk driving is also very costly for drivers and the country at large. The NHTSA says that drunk driving costs drivers $800 per year and costs the country $199 billion per year.
